June Newsletter - (Don't foget you can see the archived newsletters here.)
Concerts
Our main summer concert is on Saturday 3rd July at St Paul's Church, Covent Garden (rehearsal at 2.30 pm, concert at 7.30 pm). Tickets are now on sale from Jean Clarke at rehearsals, or from the online shop on the choir website. Please note that there will be an extra rehearsal in the week before the concert on Thursday 1st July at St Peter's in the Forest.
We are also giving a joint concert with Paulus Jongerenkoor from Utrecht on Saturday 10th July at 7.30 pm at St Mary's Church, South Woodford. Rehearsal arrangements on the day are yet to be finalised, but we don't expect there to be an extra Thursday rehearsal for this concert.
Our last Monday rehearsal of the current season will be on 5th July; we resume on 6th September.
60th anniversary season: the final event
To mark the end of the choir's anniversary season, David Pomfret will be leading a walk on Saturday 17 July through Epping Forest to enjoy the varied terrain that it offers, followed by a social lunch stop.
• We will begin at 11am from the car park at junction of Nursery Road and Connaught Avenue , Loughton (maps to be provided).
• We will cross the forest on established paths to the Owl Public House, High Beach .
• The Owl has a lunch menu but also has a barbeque at weekends.
• We will return through the forest by a somewhat different route.
• Total distance around 4.5 miles. Total ascent 300ft.
• If you don't want to walk, join us for lunch at the Owl at around 12.30.
2010-2011 concert season
Planning for our next season is at an advanced stage. Members may like to be aware that we are planning a weekend in Hastings, along the lines of our successful trips to Mere and Wirksworth, on 25th/26th September; further details to follow, but you may like to put the dates in your diary now. Other concert dates next season are 6th November and 21st December 2010, 12th March and 2nd or 16th July.
Choir CD
As most of you will already be aware, the choir CD is now out, and will be on sale at our rehearsals and concerts, price £5. The choir's previous recording of Mozart's Requiem, dating from 1995, is still available, and also costs £5. We are offering copies of both CDs for the combined price of £8.
The new CD can also be purchased from the online shop.
Library news
The choir needs a new hire librarian. This involves dealing with requests from other choirs who want to borrow music which we own, collecting the music from our storage facility at Gants Hill and posting it off to the other choir. It's a largely self-contained job and not excessively onerous (though there do tend to be peaks in demand in the period running up to the beginning of each term). It is, however, very important, as the money we earn from hiring out music helps to pay for the music we need to hire in or purchase ourselves. Without a hire librarian, we would suffer a significant loss of income which we can ill afford.
If you'd like to know more, please speak to Nicola Hayes (who's currently doing the job but is having to step down for business and domestic reasons) or to Mike our chairman (who did the job previously).
Social secretary
The choir also has a vacancy for a social secretary. At present, social events are organised by other members of the committee in addition to their own responsibilities. We have a number of ideas for social events in the 2010-11 season. It would be good if someone was prepared to take them forward, as well as any ideas of your own. If you'd be interested in helping, please have a word with the chairman or any member of the committee.
Choir tour
As those of you who were there know already, we had an excellent tour to Languedoc. We gave three good concerts which were reasonably well attended and very well received. One of the concerts was an open-air concert in the courtyard of the chateau belonging to the comte and comtesse de Margon; the comte and comtesse were there, and the comtesse revealed that she was the niece of Francis Poulenc. The week ended with a dramatic journey back to London after our coach failed to turn up and we missed our train - but we made it in the end! Heartfelt thanks are due to Kairen who is stepping down after 10 years as our tour organiser.
The committee have now started discussing where to go on tour in 2011 and subsequent years. Ruth Kaufman is our new tour organiser; if anyone has any suggestions, particularly if you have any contacts we can build on, please have a word with Ruth.
Forthcoming concerts
LFC members are invited to a concert to be given by The Green Chorus, a Japanese women's chorus featuring our very own Ai Minematsu-Bootle, on Saturday 19th June at 4.00 pm at St John's Wood Church, London NW8. Waltham Forest U3A (from Barbara Humm)
Barbara Humm is chair of Waltham Forest U3A (University of the Third Age). This is a national organisation for older people who would like to take up an interest, or study a subject with other like-minded people. Waltham Forest U3A has 270 members. We meet once a month in Winchester Road Methodist Church in Highams Park, and have a speaker on various subjects. There are also 30 small Special Interest Groups, with subjects including bridge, French, crafts, history, poetry, music appreciation, London walks, etc. These usually meet in members homes, which restricts numbers. Membership costs £15 a year for individuals, £25 for couples. A monthly newsletter is posted or emailed to all members, coach trips are organised, and visits to the cinema arranged.
I have made many new friends since joining, and it has made a real difference to my life. For further details, speak to me at rehearsals or email barbara.humm@ntlworld.com
